How AI dialers handle screening, voicemail, and phone trees.

An AI dialer needs a different response for each: explain the call to a screener, leave a message after the voicemail greeting, or work through a phone menu. Ask what the agent actually does once it hears an automated voice.

What happens when a call is screened?

I’ve worked the phones. Getting someone to hear why you’re calling is part of the job.

A screening assistant may ask for your name and reason for calling before the recipient’s phone rings. Apple’s “Ask Reason for Calling” setting does exactly that.[1] The agent should identify who’s calling and explain the reason clearly. The person still decides whether to answer.

Ask in the demo: Who answers the screening prompt—the agent or my rep? What happens if the recipient declines?

How should an AI dialer leave voicemail?

Detect the greeting. Wait until it’s time to record. Leave a short message with a reason to call back.

Detection can get it wrong. Twilio documents false classifications; shortening detection timeouts can also increase unknown results. Recognizing voicemail and finding the end of the greeting are separate steps.[2]

Ask in the demo: Use a long greeting, then a short one. Play back the actual message. Was the opening cut off? Was it relevant to that lead, or just their first name pasted into a script?

Can AI navigate a phone tree?

It can, if the product supports it. A phone tree, or IVR, routes callers using spoken prompts or keypad choices. Sending keypad tones can reach an extension; timing and pauses matter.[3]

Dialing a saved extension doesn’t prove an agent can follow a menu it hasn’t heard before.

Ask in the demo: Change the menu options. Add another step. See whether the agent reaches the intended team and what it does when there’s no useful route.

How does Thred handle these calls?

Thred is an AI power dialer for B2B sales teams. Our voice agents handle the screening introduction, generate voicemail from lead and call context, and navigate phone trees toward the right team. Your rep can steer qualification and choose when to take over.

That’s the part I care about: give my people more chances to have a useful conversation. A screening response or voicemail still isn’t a buyer conversation. See Thred’s calling workflow, then test it against the calls your team actually makes.

Bring a real phone tree to the demo. I’d rather work through that with you.
